The Maltese archipelago (a chain or cluster of islands that are formed tectonically), consisting of Malta, Gozo and Comino, they are Europes best kept secrets.
I would venture that you have probably not heard of them.

The three largest islands Malta Island, Gozo, and Comino are the only ones inhabited. Malta is the largest of the islands and its capital is Valletta. Malta is in the central Mediterranean Sea (eastern), south of the Italian island of Sicily and north of Libya.
The people speak Maltese and English, its part of the European Union and its currency is the Euro.

The temperature in the summer will reach the high 80s and 50 in winter. The water temperature will reach the high 70s in summer and mid 60s in autumn and winter.
The humidity maintains 70% year round.

Most of the visitors to Malta arrive by either cruise ships to the city of Grand Harbor
or to Maltas capital Valletta by European low cost airlines.

Malta has a rich history dating back to when man first arrived around 5200 BC. So not only will you have the amenities of resorts to enjoy, also the history of the past to explore.
The top archaeological attraction is the UNESCO-designated Hal Saflieni
Hypogeum temple ruins, an underground necropolis (large cemetery or burial ground) and the world’s only underground prehistoric temple dating back to 4000 B.C. to 2000 B.C. It is unique in that nowhere else in the world has a temple been carved out completely underground. Another historic structure is the seventeenth-century St. Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina, built to honor St. Paul who was shipwrecked on the island.

Besides the archaeological attractions, the beaches draw hundreds of thousand of people to Malta each year. The largest stretch of beach is in the town of Melliha at Ghadira Beach. The Mellieha resort in Malta is a prime destination for tourists especially from England and northern Europe. For more ideas on places to stay visit http://www.greatvacationspots.net/

Diving in Malta is also a main attraction at the western side of peninsula from Paradise Bay to Anchor Bay. The western side has caves and unspoiled lagoons to explore. Being in the Mediterranean Malta is in the mist of many shipwrecks.

Other attractions are hiking in the countryside to megalithic temples. In Mdina explore the Dingli Cliffs just a couple of mile from town, with their white cliffs towering over the sea and the hiking paths along the coast. Sailing is also a popular attraction with many charters offering tours to the three main islands, originating in the large marinas around Silema, Mellieha.

While Malta offers the usual vacation activities such as resorts, hiking, diving, its the unique archaeological attractions that will really add to the experience making it a great vacation spot.

Named by the ancient Mayans who once lived there, Cozumel translates to land of the swallows the indigenous birds that inhabit the island. The island on the east side of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico is a land mass 30miles long and 10miles wide.

The popularity of the island has developed over the last 50 years starting in 1959 with discover and documentarist Jacques Cousteau discovering and publicizing the coral reefs at the south of Cozumel Island as one of the best places for scuba diving in the world.
In 1992 Cozumel built a deepwater pier for cruise ships to dock and in the 1996 the Mexican government established the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park to protect the marine life in the park boundaries. The island population has grown from 12,000 in the 1970s to approximately 100,000 today as tourism grew.

Known for it beautiful coral reefs, diving, sports fishing, snorkeling, and beaches. Scuba diving is the most popular attraction of Cozumel today. There are also tours of the ancient Mayan civilizations for your enjoyment. The interior of the island is underdeveloped covered by thick forest and lagoons making it home to many birds and small mammals.

Most people arrive to Cozumel by the means of cruise ships, as it has become a stopping point in many cruise liness Caribbean destination. With thousands of visitors daily, it is imperative that you plan your visit to make the best use of the time youll have on the island. For more ideas on places to stay visit http://www.greatvacationspots.net/

The sandy beaches on the west side of the island have calmer waters making them best for swimming. But not for snorkeling since the sandy sea decreases the visibility in the water. Instead go to the limestone areas on the west for snorkeling. The east side of the island is lovely but the surf creates strong breakers and undertows, making it very dangerous. The popular beaches on the west side are Playa San Francisco, Playa Sol, and Playa Corona. The east side beaches are Punta Chiquero, Playa Chen Rio, and Playa Orinte.

If you are coming for a short stay and want to see the island, I recommend renting a taxi for the day to take you around the island; they can leave you at one of the beaches or other popular site if you want to stay. There will be plenty of taxis to take you back to the cruise dock afterwards. This way you wont waste time trying to get around and find the attractions yourself, since many places and streets are not well marked.

Live out your castaway fantasy – with mod cons and chic touches, of course – at these stylish island hideaways.

JK

WHY? This white cliff-top hideaway is Capri’s hippest boutique hotel. With only 22 rooms, it’s as intimate and relaxed as a luxurious, well-staffed private residence.

WHERE? A 45-minute hydrofoil ride from Naples, in the midst of a Roman settlement, overlooking the Marina Grande (harbour).

STAYING IN This handsome 19th-century villa has long been a hotel, but was recently transformed into this glamorous incarnation by Michele Bönan, the French architect responsible for the super-stylish Ferragamo-owned Lungarno hotels. Most rooms have sea views, but if you tire of gazing out at the azure blue, adjourn to the library for a flick through the coffee-table books, or head to the teak terrace and heated outdoor pool – taking in breathtaking views of the Amalfi coast and Mount Vesuvius. Lunch alfresco on the terrace at JKitchen, where the salad of buffalo mozzarella and local cherry tomatoes is the must-try dish – former guest Princess Caroline apparently took some mozzarella back to Monaco after her stay. At the end of a taxing day reading and wafting about in your kaftan like a Fifties screen siren, dress for dinner and sip Bellinis as the yachts twinkle below.

STYLE STEAL Achieve the nautical-meets-Ralph Lauren look with a blue-and-white palette, lacquered black floors, plump white couches and monochrome artworks.

OUT AND ABOUT Take the chairlift from Marina Grande up to the whitewashed town of Anacapri – at its best after the day-trippers have gone – or hop on the shuttle and browse Capri’s boutiques. Pack a polka-dot one-piece and Loren shades and spend a day out at lido-restaurant La Fontelina, situated on a rocky jetty in view of the Faraglioni rocks.

MORE INFO Double rooms cost from around £624 per night (+39 081 838 4001, jkcapri.com).

BELVEDERE

WHY? To check out this David Rockwell-designed hotel that’s all about sophisticated lounging against a rustic backdrop.

WHERE? In the School of Fine Arts quarter of Mykonos Town, where bougainvillea-covered white houses mix with full-throttle bars and nightclubs.

STAYING IN If you can resist the Mediterranean waves, everything you need is on hand. The rooms are a mix of traditional Greek colourways and state-of-the-art mod cons. It’s airy and floaty enough for you to feel like a Greek god/dess, but with the added bonus of being able to plug in your iPod. After a day by the pool, choose between Asian or modern Greek food in the hotel’s two restaurants, Matsuhisa and the new Belvedere Club. The former was set up by Nobu Matsuhisa, of Nobu restaurants fame, and serves up the same gorgeous Japanese food.

STYLE STEAL For slicker storage, try leather under-bed boxes with stitched corners, such as those at Store.

OUT AND ABOUT The winding alleyways are packed with glam boutiques, with Soho-Soho on Matogianni Street being one of the most popular – even SJP has flexed her plastic here. For seaside fun, Super Paradise Beach is partylicious, or head to unspoilt Lia, where a small taverna serves up fresh lobsters.

MORE INFO Standard double rooms cost from £357 per night (+30 228 902 5122, belvederehotel.com).

BARAZA

WHY? Endless sunshine and pristine beaches, to which the Baraza adds the perfect space for unadulterated relaxation.

WHERE? On the unspoilt east coast of Zanzibar – think talcum-powder sands, crystal sea and gently swaying palms – an island that lives up to the romantic connotations its name suggests.

STAYING IN Each villa has its own private terrace, complete with plunge pool, while the public areas offer plenty of shady nooks with bolsters, pouffes and scatter cushions. Arise from your slumber to sample menus inspired by Arabic, Indian, Persian, Asian and Swahili flavours, explore the grounds, or drop in on the spa – the essential oils, infused with local cinnamon, cloves and peppercorns (this is a spice island after all) work a particularly evocative magic. If they prompt a burst of energy, then diving, windsurfing and all kinds of aqua activities await on the beach.

STYLE STEAL Limit the beaten metallics and keep things neutral to ensure the look is more ‘rock the kasbah’ than ‘Aladdin’s cave’.

OUT AND ABOUT Head for Stone Town, the island’s cultural heart, and lose yourself in bustling bazaars and winding alleyways. Snap up spices to enliven your cooking, or jump on a dhow for a cruise round the outer islands.

MORE INFO Villas cost £768 per night, including meals, drinks and some activities (baraza-zanzibar.com).
