The West Indies and Australia were involved in the first-ever tied ODI in Australia. Fifteen years later, the two teams met at Bourda, Guyana, in the fifth match of a seven-match ODI series. The series was level at 2-2 going into this match; the stakes were high, as the winner would take the lead going into the last two games. Rain affected the start of this ODI, and the game was reduced to a 30-overs-a-side affair. The West Indies batted first in this crucial fixture, with Ridley Jacobs and Sherwin Campbell opening the innings.

The West Indies had an enterprising start, with the opening pair posting 83 runs for the first wicket in 14.3 overs. After that productive stand, both openers fell within one run of each other – dismissed by allrounder Shane Lee. Jacobs made 33 off 49 balls, while Campbell was more aggressive in scoring 41 off 41 balls. Hooper and Adams came together, but they fell within one run of each other to leave the West Indies on 101/4 in the 18th over.

Chanderpaul and Stuart Williams took the West Indies past 150, but Chanderpaul fell to Shane Lee for 27 off 41 balls. With quick runs needed, Phil Simmons came in and played a cameo that delighted to Bourda crowd, hitting two towering sixes. Simmons scored 15 from just 5 balls to help the home side to 173/5 off 30 overs. The two Shanes took the wickets for the Australians. Shane Lee too 3/39 off six overs, while Shane Warne bagged 2/35 off his six overs.

The Aussies had a decent start, scoring 26 runs off 31 balls thanks to Adam Gilchrist’s attacking batting. However, Mervyn Dillon had Mark Waugh dismissed for just five runs. One ball later, Dillon was on a hattrick, dismissing Ricky Ponting for a golden duck; Australia was 26/2. Darren Lehmann survived the hattrick ball, but struggled to come to terms with the bowling. He made 13 off 24 balls before Carl Hooper’s part-time off-spin dismissed him. The Aussies lost Gilchrist (44) with the score on 70, but Steve Waugh took up the mantle.

The Aussies lost three wickets quickly; they were reeling at 119/7 at the start of the 24th over. However, Steve Waugh (72) remained and, in partnership with Shane Warne (19), brought Australia ever closer to the victory target. It came down to the final over of the match. Australia needed four runs from one ball. Keith Athurton bowled to Waugh and the Aussie captain hit the ball to deep midwicket.

Stuart Williams fielded the ball and the exuberant crowd ran onto the pitch and swarmed around the players, as Athurton broke the stumps and tried to avoid the crowd. Waugh and Warne complained that they were prevented from attempting a third run and the situation had to be resolved by the match referee. Amidst the controversy, the match referee declared the game a tied match and the series remained level.
